Air Jordan 1 High, the original edition signed MJ
The Air Jordan 1 High, the first model signed MJ
Inspired by the Nike Air Force 1 and the Nike Air Ship, the Air Jordan 1 was born from the imagination of designer Peter Moore in 1984. Created for Michael Jordan, the model is intended for the courts of the NBA but the basketball league is opposed to the player wearing the pair on the floor.
Why? Its red and black colors - in tribute to the team of the basketball star, the Chicago Bulls - violate the dress code of the NBA according to which players are required to wear only sneakers of black or white. The league is forcing MJ to pay a $5000 fine for each game during which he wears Air Jordan 1 High in the colors of his team.
Far from being discouraged by this blow of fate, the Swoosh brand seized the opportunity to take advantage of the buzz and promote its new model. The bet is winning: the Air Jordan 1 High break sales records and enter the legend!
Three years later, Nike joins the number 23 to create a brand of its own: the Jordan Brand. Even today, more than 35 years after their release, the Air Jordan 1 High remains one of the brand's bestsellers and continues to fascinate sneaker addicts around the world. Proof if it were needed that the saying is true: "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger"!
The Air Jordan 1 High, a must-have retro
When he designed the Air Jordan 1 in 1984, Peter Moore designed a sneaker with a high leather upper: in the 1980s, high top sneakers were indeed a must-have! Designed by Moore, the original "Jordan Wings" logo - representing a winged balloon - appears above the Swoosh, on the top of the outer panel of the Air Jordan 1 High.
But over the next few years, the Air Jordan 1 evolved, and two new models joined the original Air Jordan High: a mid-ankle model, the Air Jordan 1 Mid and a low model, the Air Jordan Low.
Despite the success of the two new silhouettes, the Air Jordan 1 High remains a legendary and timeless sneaker. With its retro lines and countless colorways, the Air Jordan 1 High is a must-have for both men and women.
Reissues, collaborations and limited series
Since 1994, retro reissues of the Air Jordan High have been released regularly. The famous sneaker is available in many colorways (Bred, Chicago, Lucky Green, Dark Mocha, Court Purple, Midnight Navy, Smoke Grey, Tie Dye, Pine Green Black, Black Metallic Gold...) to the delight of sneakerheads.
