Patta x Nike, the return! On the occasion of the release of their Air Max 1 Monarchwe take a look at the history of the Dutch entity, sneaker retailer doubled with a streetwear brand that is among the most prolific collaborators. Its path and its singular style are worth it today to be considered as an institution.
Patta, the resourcefulness of sneakerheads
Patta was founded in Amsterdam in 2004. Its name means "sneaker" in a dialect of Surinam, the land of origin of the founders Edson Sabajo and Guillaume Schmidt. These two figures of the Amsterdam hip-hop scene are indeed sneakerheads, who identified the lack of proposal on their territory to make a business of it.
That's how Patta started: the two friends would go on trips to the States and bring back kicks that were not available in the Netherlands, which they sold in their store in the center of the Dutch capital without having an account with the equipment manufacturers. Their immediate success will attract them very quickly: from 2006, Patta becomes a collaborator of Nikeand this is the starting point of a rich history that still continues today.
A history with Nike made of legendary pairs
The first pair Nike co-signed by PattaThe Air Max 90 "Homegrown Grass" with a green upper full of details, is already mythical. It symbolizes what will make the success of the shop among sneakerheads, an asserted creative approach translated by unusual color combinations, mix of original materials and references to urban culture. We often see the illustration of the ideal collaborator, who infuses just enough of his DNA while respecting that of alter ego.
The method will be repeated over and over again, as in 2009 with a pack of Air Max 1 for its fifth anniversary, a "Cherrywood" developed with the support of the artist Parra, the Air Max 95/90... Until its new pack reviving its glorious past because it is still based on the AM1, revisited this time with a wave-shaped mudguard.
A co-signature always very sought after
The "Patta touch" is not limited to Nike. The other leading manufacturers of the sneakers game have also called on it, but also more confidential, giving rise in all cases to models as surprising as qualitative: the equipped with ASICS is the most notable, before Mizuno, Diadora, Reebok, New BalanceVans, KangaROOS, Pro-Keds... To date, Patta has about sixty footwear releases.
In parallel to this activity, Patta also launched his streetwear brand in 2011. His style celebrating the 90's-2000's has also spoken to a large number of people, and his collections are now distributed worldwide. Here again, the first-class collabs are legion - Carhartt WIP, Stüssy, CP Company or Tommy Hilfiger -, as another sign of his aura.
